Bristol sign Davies as cover for hooker Oghre

Bristol hooker Garbiel Oghre will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, with Doncaster Knights’ Fred Davies joining on loan.

Oghre, 27, who has won one cap for England, needs surgery after picking up the injury in Bristol’s win over Newcastle last month.

Oghre has been Bristol’s first-choice hooker this season, making 19 starts in all competitions and scoring 14 tries.

Davies, who played 14 times for Bristol during a two-year spell from 2022 to 2024, joins on loan until the end of the season as cover.

“Losing Gabe for the rest of the season is another huge blow during a season of significant injury setbacks across our squad,” Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam told the club website.

“But as we’ve said throughout, it’s now an opportunity for the next guy to step up and make their mark during the business end of the season.”

He added: “Fred is a player who knows our game and our environment and will be able to slot seamlessly back into the squad and we’re grateful to Ian McGeechan and Doncaster for facilitating the move.”
