Phillips emulates father to make Barbarians history

When Carys Phillips takes the field at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday she will complete a moment of Barbarians history.

The Phillips family has already produced two Wales internationals but Carys and Rowland will become the first father and daughter to represent the famous club.

Hooker Phillips, among the most-capped women players for Wales, will follow in the footsteps of her father Rowland – himself a former dual-code international – who wore the black and white jersey some 23 years ago.

“It’s a cool story to share with each other and I hope the family will have a good time when they come to watch,” said Carys.

“My dad lets me know now and then that he played for the Baa-Baas and text me to say he thinks we’re the first father daughter.

“He spoke about the enjoyment of playing for the Baa-Baas. He said to have fun with it, get stuck in and make memories.”

When Sarah Levy played for the Barbarians against South Africa in 2021, she followed her great-grandfather Louis Babrow, who represented the club eight times between 1938 and 1940. But never before has a father and daughter managed that feat.

Carys has competed at four World Cups during an 87-cap international career that has included spells at Ospreys, Bristol, Harlequins and Worcester.

But she now treads new ground as she emulates Rowland, a Wales flanker between 1987 and 1990, who stepped back from retirement to play for the Barbarians against East Midlands in 2003.

“It’s so much fun to play for the Barbarians that I’m really happy Carys has this chance now,” said Phillips, a former Wales assistant coach.

“Mine wasn’t as big an experience as Carys is going to get this weekend. This is a chance for her to play with world-class players.”

New Zealand star Ruby Tui lines up on the wing in a squad that represents nine different nations and will be captained by Australia forward Emily Chancellor.

Phillips will be among an international group of front row players such as England’s Bryony Cleall, Scotland’s Christine Belise, Laura Delgado of Spain and Charli Jacobi of USA.

“This is an opportunity to meet new people and play with unbelievable rugby players,” she said.

“Rownita Marston-Mulhearn is absolutely hilarious and just being around Lori Cramer in camp is great fun.”

It is ironic that Phillips, 33, should achieve this moment of history against her Wales teammates having been an unused member of the squad throughout this year’s Six Nations.

“It will be a different experience playing against Wales, being there during the Six Nations and now I’m here playing against them. But I’ve loved it so far, and I don’t want it to end.”
