Trailfinders have no fear in PWR final – Burton

Trailfinders forward Abi Burton says her team will have “no fear” heading into their maiden Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) final on Sunday.
The west London side secured their highest ever PWR finish, in fourth, before beating triple champions and table-toppers Gloucester-Hartpury in their semi-final.
Now, they meet north London rivals Saracens at The Stoop, with Sarries targeting a record fourth title since the Premier 15s/PWR’s inception in 2017.
“We ain’t scared”, Burton told BBC Radio London. “Obviously we’ve played them twice (in the regular season), and the scorelines haven’t gone our way. But there’s not an ounce of fear in our dressing room.
“We truly believe we can win – and what do you play rugby for if you don’t believe that?
“Yes – you take in mind what’s happened in the past, but ultimately it’s no fear.”

After the formation of the Premier 15s in 2017 helped women’s domestic rugby become a professional enterprise, London clubs dominated the early running.
Saracens and Harlequins contested the first three finals, with Sarries winning two.
But since then, there has been an emergence of west and south west teams, with Exeter Chiefs reaching the 2021-22 final before losing to Saracens.
Subsequently, Gloucester-Hartpury have won three consecutive PWR titles, beating Exeter, Bristol and Saracens in the finals.
Trailfinders head coach Barney Maddison is delighted the competition is becoming more open than ever.
“It’s so important that the league is competitive,” he said. “I’ve been involved now for three years, and I can see how different it is already.
“The way the game is played, the professionalism of the league, and how competitive it is.
“If we can make all teams really competitive across the board, it’s going to be nothing but good for the PWR.
“We’ve thrown our hat into the ring this year, and mixed things up at the top of the league which is a really cool thing to see.”

‘Queens of the PWR, queens of London’
Burton was part of the England squad that won the 2025 World Cup, as well as the 2026 Six Nations Championship.
The 26-year-old has played in all three of Trailfinders’ campaigns since they joined the PWR, and says the over-riding emotion is pure excitement heading into Sunday.
She said: “The fact that it is at The Stoop, an all-London final. You’ll be queens of the PWR, queens of London by the end of this.
“It will just be a spectacular occasion, and occasions like this will be new to some of our girls, but a lot of us have been in situations where we’ve been surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people.
“It’s just trying to get those other girls prepared for what might come at them, but at the same time try to enjoy the moment because there will only be a certain number of times in your career you get moments like this.”
Coach Maddison says he’s well aware of the challenge facing his side but just wants his players to relish the whole experience.
“The key thing is for everyone to enjoy themselves, and the time together – it’s our last week together as a group,” he added.
“Ultimately, we’re all competitive, and we all want to win, so let’s put our best foot forward, competing in a final.
“It’s going to be a tough game. Saracens have played really well all season, they’ve probably been the most consistent team across the season.”
