Manchester United could launch a surprise move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta at the turn of the year.
The Red Devils were tipped to land a new striker during the summer transfer window, but could not find a proper solution before the deadline.
Joshua Zirkzee was the subject of loan offers before the window closed, but United did not want to part ways with him without a replacement.
It is now claimed that United are weighing up a winter move for Mateta, whose contract with Palace expires at the end of the campaign.
The Frenchman has been pushing to leave the Eagles for some time but couldn’t do so this summer after sustaining a hamstring injury.
He should return sometime next month, and United are prepared to monitor his condition before making a possible approach this winter.
United are willing to offload Zirkzee if Mateta were to join in January. Everton and Juventus are interested in landing the former.
