The first images have been released of a brand new crime series filmed and set in Wales with an all-star cast.

Sky’s Under Salt Marsh stars Kelly Reilly – who plays Beth in the Western series Yellowstone on Paramount – as former detective Jackie Ellis, now a teacher after an unsolved case shatters her family and work life.

Welsh actors Sir Jonathan Pryce, best know for The Crown, and Fresh Meat’s Kimberly Nixon also feature in the cast.

The six-part crime drama, that was filmed on Anglesey and across Gwynedd, has been praised by critics ahead of its release at the end of January.

Under Salt Marsh is based in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen – which means Salt Marsh in Welsh.

The limited series starts as the town prepares for a once-in-a-generation storm, and Jackie discovers the body of her eight-year-old pupil, Cefin, seemingly drowned.

The community is left reeling and can’t help but be reminded of the unsolved disappearance of Nessa, Jackie’s niece, who went missing three years prior.

Jackie is reunited with her old partner, Det Eric Bull, who has been brought back to lead the investigation and who has something to prove to the residents of Morfa Halen who he failed before.

Convinced the cases are linked, Jackie and Eric must reconcile and race against the storm to uncover long-buried secrets before all evidence is gone for good.

Known for playing Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crown, Olivier award-winning and Oscar-nominated Sir Jonathan Pryce plays Solomon Bevan.

Also part of the cast are Harry Lawtey, who played Richard Burton in the film Mr Burton, and Welsh actors Dino Fetscher, Rhodri Meilir and Julian Lewis Jones.

Aberffraw is one of the breath-taking settings for the crime drama and can be seen in the show’s trailer, with filming taking place in the village on Anglesey early in 2025.

Viewers can also expect to see Newborough Forest, Malltraeth and Menai Bridge.

In Gwynedd, the cast were spotted filming on Barmouth’s promenade in October 2025, with further scenes filmed in Fairbourne and Llanbedr.

The drama is set to premier on 30 January on Sky Atlantic and Now TV.
