Arsenal are pushing hard to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, according to The Independent.

The Gunners are expected to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season, and Alvarez is among the top targets.

Alvarez, 26, would ideally prefer to stay in Spain with Barcelona or Real Madrid, but Atletico have no plans to sell to either club.

Paris Saint-Germain have also distanced themselves from negotiations,, which means Arsenal are well-placed to land him.

The Independent claim that Alvarez is open to joining the Gunners, now that he can not join Barcelona or Madrid this summer.

Manager Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of the World Cup winner and the club are pushing hard for a transfer to materialise.

Atletico previously proposed to sign Viktor Gyokeres as part of the deal for Alvarez, and that possibility could open up once more.

The La Liga giants want at least £120m for Alvarez, but the price tag could be halved if Gyokeres were to move the other way.
