Manchester United are not guaranteed to land a third midfielder during the ongoing summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils had an exciting start to the summer with the midfield acquisitions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively.

It seemed as though they could spend more money to bolster the squad in the coming weeks, but there has been literally no activity, barring the free transfer of goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

United are planning to make more signings before the transfer deadline on September 1, but there is no assurance that another midfield recruit will be pursued by the hierarchy.

Instead, the focus could be on signing a left-back or a left winger. With Marcus Rashford likely to stay, United have the left wing position well covered for the new season.

Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu are other solutions. Hence, a young left-back to compete with Luke Shaw could be targeted by the club in the coming weeks.
