Iain Henderson says he “would love” to continue playing for Ireland as long as he can despite missing out on Six Nations selection.
Ulster captain Henderson was left out of Andy Farrell’s 37-strong squad for the upcoming tournament.
Speaking before the squad was released on Wednesday, the 33-year-old second row said he would “back whatever decision Andy makes”.
Henderson made his Ireland debut in 2012, has won 85 international caps and was selected for the British and Irish Lions in 2017 and 2021.
“I’ve loved my time with Ireland and I would love to continue it as long as I can,” Henderson told BBC Sport NI on Tuesday.
“The team and the environment he has created over the past number of seasons has been second to none in international rugby.
“To be able to play with that calibre of players and to have another opportunity to go and win another Six Nations would be something amazing to be a part of.”

Henderson added that “any player in Ireland would bite your hand off” for a chance to win a Six Nations title with Ireland.
He has helped Ireland win five Six Nations, including two Grand Slams in 2018 and 2023.
Despite not being named in the initial squad, former Ireland and Ulster back row Stephen Ferris believes Henderson still has an international future, and could still play a role in the Six Nations.
“He has been playing ok for Ulster and he’s a talisman, but there’s young blood snapping at his heels,” he told BBC Sport NI.
“They want to get bigger opportunities in bigger games. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was called back in at some stage, and he might even be a 24th or 25th man in some of these extended squads.
“I’m sure a lot of people in this squad have learnt a lot off Hendy over the past few years and could be very grateful to him for that.”
Having ‘guys in green hugely positive’ for Ulster
While Henderson missed out on selection, seven of his Ulster team-mates were named in Farrell’s squad.
Backs Jacob Stockdale, Stuart McCloskey, Robert Baloucoune and the uncapped Nathan Doak were included by Farrell, along with forwards Tom Stewart, Tom O’Toole and Nick Timoney.
That more than doubles the tally of three from last year’s tournament, and reflects Ulster’s improved form.
Richie Murphy’s side are third in the United Rugby Championship table and finished top of their Pool in the Challenge Cup to secure a home knockout tie.
Eight more players, including brothers Zac and Bryn Ward, were named in the Ireland XV squad to face England ‘A’ in February.
“We’ve always said it, having guys in green jerseys is hugely positive for Ulster,” Henderson added on Tuesday before the squad was named.
“We want to see as many of our younger guys get exposure to see how a different team works, how international coaches work and get experience at that top-end level with the pressure.
“I think we have a handful of guys who are excelling with Ulster and would continue to excel at international level.”
