10 MLB Legends Who Disappeared From the Public Eye After Retirement

Baseball players often end up in the spotlight after reaching the major leagues. Because of MLB’s fanfare, they often stay in the public eye even after leaving professional sports.

However, several players have stayed out of the spotlight after hanging up their cleats. Here are 10 MLB legends who disappeared from the public eye after retiring.

#1. Sandy Koufax

Los Angeles Dodgers icon Sandy Koufax ended his MLB career after winning his third Cy Young award in 1966. Koufax retired abruptly due to struggles with severe arthritis and chronic arm pain.

Despite being one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Koufax has mostly maintained a low profile after retiring, particularly by keeping his personal life private. He cut short a broadcasting career six years into a 10-year contract in 1967, and he also helped develop Dodgers pitchers throughout the 1980s and reprised that role in the 2010s. He occasionally attends Dodgers games, even catching the NLCS this season.

#2. Tim Lincecum

Tim Lincecum established himself as one of the league’s best pitchers during his stellar stint with the San Francisco Giants. Lincecum, who won consecutive NL Cy Young awards, helped the Giants win three World Series.

However, Lincecum ended his MLB career after just 10 seasons and has largely disappeared from public view since retiring. Reportedly, even former teammates and coaches have difficulty reaching him.

#3. Mark Fidrych

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark Fidrych rose to stardom after winning the AL Rookie of the Year award in 1976. He recorded the best ERA in his rookie season and earned All-Star selections in his first two MLB seasons.

However, Fidrych, who died in April 2009 at 54, retired after just five seasons with the Tigers due to a shoulder injury. Fidrych maintained a low profile after his retirement as he lived with his family on a farm outside of Northboro, Massachusetts. He reportedly became a commercial truck driver and also helped out his mother-in-law’s restaurant.

Although he made time for special moments for the Tigers and did much work to help out his charity organization, he seemed to prefer a low-key lifestyle.

#4. Rafael Palmeiro

Former Texas Rangers infielder Rafael Palmeiro built a reputation as one of the game’s hardest hitters during his nearly two-decade MLB career.

However, the four-time All-Star’s career was marred by controversy after he was suspended for steroid use in 2005. Burned by the accusations, he retreated from baseball life for years, but he has been involved with some of his former teams, like the Texas Rangers, along with charity golf events and autograph signings in recent years. He played for an independent league team in 2018 and made a guest appearance with the Savannah Bananas in September.

#5. Jason Giambi

Former Oakland Athletics outfielder Jason Giambi rose to fame while winning the American League MVP in 2000. His stellar stint with the Athletics helped him secure a seven-year, $120-million deal with the New York Yankees in 2001.

The All-Star outfielder continued his rise with the AL East franchise, smashing 40-plus home runs in his first two seasons in the Bronx. However, his hitting declined after the 2008 season, leading to his retirement in 2015.

Despite being one of the league’s best hitters for almost a decade, Giambi chose his family over fanfare and has mostly kept a low profile after his retirement to focus on his wife and children. Nevertheless, he’s appeared on financial news networks to discuss business issues and has made occasional appearances as a Fox Sports baseball analyst, in addition to being seen on some baseball podcasts.

#6. Ángel Pagán

Former San Francisco Giants outfielder Ángel Pagán helped the NL West team to the World Series during his first season with them in 2012. Pagán batted .288 and led the MLB with 15 triples that season.

He was troubled by injuries after the 2012 season and became a free agent in 2017. However, he wasn’t satisfied with contract offers in free agency and never played in the MLB again. Pagán has kept a low profile since his playing career ended.

In May 2019, Pagan and two others were rescued off the coast of Puerto Rico after their boat capsized, according to reports.

#7. Albert Belle

Former Cleveland Indians outfielder Albert Belle had a stellar MLB stint with the franchise. The five-time All-Star led the league in home runs in 1995.

However, the five-time Silver Slugger Award winner has stayed away from baseball after his retirement. Belle, who was suspended five times by MLB and was known for his temper, has also declined to attend team reunions and other occasions with Cleveland over the years. He didn’t even attend his Hall of Fame induction with the team in 2016.

Belle, who was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 but is not in the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame, is also estranged from LSU, even though he was one of the earliest stars of the powerhouse college baseball program. He was dismissed from the team in May 1987 despite leading the SEC in home runs. That team made the program’s first College World Series appearances in 1986 and ’87. Belle was a first-team All-SEC selection both seasons (but missed the 1987 CWS).

#8. Evan Gattis

Former Houston Astros star Evan Gattis made a delayed start to his MLB career in 2013. He smashed 21 and 22 home runs in the first two seasons of his career with the Atlanta Braves.

However, his best season at the plate was with the Astros in 2016, when he smashed a career-high 32 home runs. Gattis, who had 139 home runs in his six MLB seasons, helped the Astros to the World Series title in 2017, but disappeared after the 2018 season. The World Series-winning Astros were infamously tainted by the sign-stealing scandal, and on a podcast with The Athletic in 2020, Gattis admitted that the team “obviously cheated baseball and cheated fans.”

#9. Randy Johnson

Former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson is widely recognized as one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Johnson, the only pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in four consecutive seasons, hasn’t disappeared from the spotlight, but he has shifted his focus, literally and figuratively.

Johnson, who studied photojournalism at the University of Southern California before his legendary MLB career, has chosen a full-time second career as a professional photographer. He’s had showcases for his photography and published a book. His scope includes photo safaris, shooting the rock band Rush and, of course, sporting events, including the NFL, MLB and NASCAR. His work has been featured in major magazines, including Rolling Stone.

The first-ballot Hall of Famer (2015) reportedly delayed his jersey retirement by the Seattle Mariners to give his former teammate Ichiro Suzuki the limelight. Both wore No. 51. Ichiro’s jersey was retired in 2025, and Johnson’s in 2026. (He also had his No. 51 jersey retired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2015.)

#10. Khalil Greene

Former shortstop Khalil Greene made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2003. After a few mediocre seasons at the plate, Greene broke through by hitting a career-high 27 home runs in 2007.

However, Greene’s production declined in the following season, and he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in December 2008. He struggled with social anxiety disorder and filed for free agency after the 2009 season.

Although he signed with the Texas Rangers in 2010, he didn’t participate in spring training and was released by the franchise as he announced he was continuing to suffer from social anxiety disorder.

Greene, who won the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award in 2002 as college baseball’s best player at Clemson, has, as he reportedly predicted to teammates during his career, been mostly out of sight after his career ended prematurely.
