A blockbuster trade has taken place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the 2027 retention deadline, which is later this month. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have engaged in a deal that features four players.
CSK have acquired Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards, with the former being signed at a lower price than the one he went for at the IPL 2026 auction. In return, the Men in Yellow have sent Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis to the Orange Army.
On that note, here are three ways in which CSK will benefit from their trade with SRH.
#3 CSK can now afford to release Zak Foulkes and Matt Short

CSK’s overseas options after the IPL 2026 auction didn’t make for pretty reading. Both their budget allocation and their role coverage left a lot to be desired, and that was reflected in their performances during the season.
While Matt Short played a few games and failed to deliver the goods, Zak Foulkes was nowhere near the playing XI. Now, in the form of Livingstone and Edwards, CSK have two overseas players who are clear upgrades on the duo.
The Super Kings can now head into the IPL 2027 auction without the necessity to fill their overseas roster.
#2 The Super Kings’ finishing options are now of a higher quality

MS Dhoni didn’t play a single game in IPL 2026, and CSK didn’t always have firepower at the end of the innings. Jamie Overton did his best, but Chennai clearly need someone who can capitalize on the death overs on a regular basis.
Livingstone fits that bill well, as a pace-hitter who can adjust to positions in the lower-middle order. The fact that he is an all-rounder and not a specialist batter or a keeper like Dhoni will also help CSK, who need to have sufficient batting depth without sacrificing too much bowling quality.
#1 CSK now have more flexibility with their overseas slots
Noor Ahmad has been in dreadful form lately, meaning that CSK might not be able to use one of their four overseas slots on him. Livingstone’s presence could allow the Super Kings to field a XI that has enough spin options without depending on a specialist.
Even otherwise, with Jamie Overton, Dewald Brevis, Akeal Hosein and Matt Henry in the mix, Livingstone’s presence may also allow CSK to field a playing XI that has only three overseas players. They could bring in the fourth player depending on the conditions after the first innings, something which they couldn’t always do with effectiveness last year.
