Price range: $
Dish to order: Birria tacos
A hole in the wall, an unpretentious nook, a seamless part of one of Boston’s more diverse neighborhoods; Taquería Jalisco has been serving up authentic Mexican in East Boston for over 20 years. Authentic Mexican can be hard to come by in Boston, but Jalisco hits the spot with Mexican classics updated with some subtle tweaks. The house salsa, for instance, uses orange for a subtle hint of sweetness, and birria tacos come with a small bowl of jus for dipping. The flavors, the colors, the textures—Jalisco gets them all right. There are a couple of glass-bottled soft drinks on offer, as well as some house made aguas frescas, which come in various flavors including horchata, cantaloupe, and Tamarindo. The Jamaica, made from hibiscus flowers with just a hint of sugar, is a great way to quench your thirst after some of Jalisco’s spicier fare.
