Over half of SME decision makers do not believe artificial intelligence (AI) is going to replace traditional software platforms in the next three years, new data reveals.

The study by YouGov found that 54% believe AI-powered tools will not take the place of traditional software, with 30% saying it will.

This may partially be because most businesses are happy with their current technological setup, the report said. Four in five businesses useing traditional software described themselves as satisfied with the solutions they already use.

Only 5% of the more than 1,000 SMEs polled said they are using AI extensively, with 29% saying they are using it in a more limited way.

When asked about their top barriers to AI adoption, 65% said the reliability and accuracy of the technology, 51% cited data security and privacy and 33% believed it was regulatory issues.

AI companies may need to reassure smaller businesses on multiple fronts to increase adoption, YouGov said.

When asked what would motivate them to switch from traditional software to AI tools, 51% said improvements in efficiency or productivity, 45% cited cost savings, 34% said ease of use, 30% said better features and capabilities, and 28% said better integration with other tools.

A quarter were outright AI avoidant, saying nothing at all would motivate them to switch to AI.
