Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee will compete at a Diamond League event for the first time in seven years when he races over 5,000m in Monaco on Friday – live on the BBC.

Since delivering one of the standout moments of the Paris 2024 Games, Yee has experimented with marathon running – making his debut in London last year before running what was then the second-fastest time by a Briton in history in Valencia.

The 28-year-old has begun his transition back to triathlon this year, but remains keen to take himself out of his comfort zone when the opportunity arises.

“I think we’ve always seen this kind of template of how we should look to prepare for an Olympic Games. I’m trying to look in slightly different avenues to be able to unlock new performances,” Yee told BBC Sport.

“For me, an important thing throughout this all is just learning, being able to take in these opportunities, and come out the other side as a better athlete overall.”

Yee last contested a Diamond League 5,000m race in London in 2019 and has a personal best of 13 minutes 13.89 seconds.

He will test himself against a stellar field, featuring the two fastest athletes this year in Addisu Yihune and Birhanu Balew, world silver medallist Isaac Kimeli and 10,000m world champion Jimmy Gressier.

“New challenges excite me. I’ve grown from being almost the smallest person in the room. These are the points where you do your fastest learning and improving, and I really felt like I did that between the London and Valencia marathons,” said Yee.

“To be able to do that in a similar environment with the Diamond League is really exciting.”

Fellow Britons Matthew Hudson-Smith (400m), Jake Wightman and Ben Pattison (1000m), Kimani Jack (high jump) are also in action, live on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website and app 19:00-21:00 on Friday.

Hodgkinson and Kerr target world records in London

After her shock second-place finishes in Stockholm and Eugene, Britain’s Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson will next race at the Diamond League meeting in London.

Hodgkinson, who competed in Eugene with both knees heavily strapped after suffering a bad fall on a run, hopes to be ready to beat the long-standing women’s 800m world record at the London Diamond League meeting on 18 July.

Josh Kerr has also announced he will attempt to break the long-standing men’s mile world record on the same day.

The London Athletics Meet is a key date in the diary of many British stars.

The women’s 200m showdown between relay team-mates Amy Hunt, Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita is among the other standout events.

How does the Diamond League work?

The Diamond League – athletics’ premier one-day meeting series – consists of 15 stops, this year culminating in a two-day final in Brussels in September.

Athletes compete for points across 32 Diamond League disciplines at the 14 regular series meetings in a bid to qualify for the finals.

The top six athletes in field events, top eight in track events from 100m up to 800m, and top 10 in distances from 1500m upwards, will qualify for the finals.

The finals, which precede the inaugural season-ending World Athletics Ultimate Championship, are a winner-takes-all showdown to be crowned Diamond League champion in each event.

All Diamond League events will be shown on the BBC until 2030 after a new multi-year deal was agreed last year.

The total prize money remains the same as 2025, when it was increased to $9.2m (£6.8m) – including $500,000 (£370,000) at each of the 14 series meetings, and $2.2m (£1.6m) at the Diamond League final.

However, the prize money structure has been altered to provide higher earnings to the winners of eight selected ‘Diamond+’ disciplines’ at each meet, which offer $20,000 (£14,800) at series meetings and up to $60,000 (£44,400) at the finals.
