Tributes have been paid to a young rugby player who sadly died after suffering a medical emergency at a Welsh beauty spot.

Iestyn Lewis, 22, was tragically killed after an incident at Keeper’s Pond in Abergavenny on Wednesday.

Gwent Police have confirmed they are not treating his death as suspicious. His passing has rocked the local community.

Taking to social media, Brynithel RFC, where Lewis had spent around four years as a player, posted: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the devastating news that one of our own, Iestyn Lewis, has sadly passed away.

“There are no words that can truly express the sadness being felt throughout Brynithel RFC today.

“Iestyn wasn’t just a player; he was a teammate, a friend, and a valued member of our club. His passion for rugby, his commitment to the Owls, and the memories he created in the green and black will never be forgotten.

“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with Iestyn’s family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him during this incredibly difficult time.

“Once an Owl, always an Owl.

“Gone from our sight, never from our hearts.”

Brynithel Team Manager Scott Pitt added: “Iestyn was one of the quiet ones, but he never needed words to make an impact.

“Every time he pulled on a Brynithel shirt, he gave everything he had. Fearless in defence and always willing to put his body on the line, he played with a heart far bigger than his size.

“He was humble enough to ask questions, determined to improve, and earned the respect of everyone around him through his courage and commitment. Iestyn wasn’t just one of our players—he was one of our own. He will be forever missed, but never forgotten.”

Iestyn had also spent a season with Cwmcarn United, who posted a heartfelt tribute of their own to the youngster

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former player Iestyn Lewis, known to many as “Sprout”, who sadly lost his life yesterday,” a statement on social media said.

“Iestyn played for us for one season, having joined from Brynithel after coming through the ranks at Abertillery Youth. He had only recently celebrated his 22nd birthday.

“A fine winger and a committed player, Sprout consistently punched above his weight and was a valued and respected member of the team. His dedication, determination, and character made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of playing alongside him.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Iestyn’s family, friends, and all who knew him during this incredibly sad and difficult time.”

A report into the circumstances around his death is currently being prepared for the coroner.

A statement from Gwent Police earlier this week read: “We received a report of a medical emergency at Keeper’s Pond, Abergavenny at around 2.45pm on Wednesday, July 8.

“Officers attended alongside paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service.

“A 22-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene; his next of kin has been informed.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
