Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen agonisingly missed out on a bronze medal in a tough 800m freestyle final as he finished fourth at the Tollcross Swimming Centre.

Wiffen finished in a time of 7:48.82, just over nine seconds behind Australian Matthew Galea, with whom he was battling throughout whole race for a place on the podium.

Sam Short, winner of the 400m in which Wiffen finished fifth, eased to the gold medal while fellow Aussie Benjamin Goedemans claimed silver.

Short pulled away from the chasing pack in the first 100m and while Wiffen initially looked to be keeping pace with the likes of Goedemans and Galea until they eventually managed to edge out in front at various stages of the final 100m to secure their places on the podium.

The 25-year-old will hope to bounce back from his disappointment when he features in the 1500m final on Wednesday.

It is the event in which he won bronze at the Paris Olympics and the Birmingham 2022 Games.
