An 11-year-old girl has died after being found in the water at a beauty spot in Midlothian.

A major search was launched over reports of concern for the girl in Gore Glen Woodland Park, near Gorebridge, at about 12:40 on Thursday.

The girl’s body was found in the park’s Gore Water, near Shank Bridge, at about 16:25. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Her death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

The force said the girl’s family was aware.

The woodland park is popular with walkers and has views of the nearby Pentland Hills.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it sent two fire engines to the area to support the search.

Two ambulances, a special operations team and a critical care paramedic from the Scottish Ambulance Service were also at the scene.

Gore Glen was the site of Scotland’s first industrial-scale gunpowder mill, which was established in 1794.

For nearly 70 years, the Gore Water was used to power 10 waterwheels.
