Swansea City have signed Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio for an undisclosed fee, which is understood to be about £3.4m.

The Canada international, 29, has agreed a two-year deal with the option for a further 12 months at the Championship club.

Eustaquio’s arrival looks like something of a coup for Swansea given his experience at club and international level.

“Stephen is an experienced leader who possesses great technical quality and game understanding,” said Swansea head coach Vitor Matos.

“His qualities will complement the options we already have available to us in midfield, and he is an incredible professional.

“He is going to be an important player for us, on and off the pitch, and I am sure our fans are going to enjoy watching him play for Swansea City.”

Canada’s regular vice-captain, Eustaquio skippered his country for much of this year’s World Cup as a result of Alphonso Davies’ fitness troubles.

The 61-cap player scored a late winning goal – his fifth for Canada – in the last-32 win over South Africa.

Eustaquio has played for Porto since 2022, and has helped the club win a string of trophies including two league titles.

He has also played in the Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup for the Portuguese giants.

Eustaquio featured as a substitute in their Primeira Liga game against Rio Ave earlier this month and made 12 appearances in the first half of last season before joining Los Angeles FC on loan.

Born in Canada to Portuguese parents, Eustaquio moved to Portugal as a child and played for Portugal at under-21 level before committing to Canada.

Having started his senior club career with Torrense, Eustaquio moved on to Leixoes and then Chaves.

He briefly played in Mexico for Cruz Azul before returning to Portugal with Pacos Ferreira and then joining Porto.

Swansea have been looking to strengthen their midfield, having sold Ethan Galbraith to Stoke this summer and said farewell to Malick Yalcouye after his loan spell from Brighton.

Eustaquio is Swansea’s sixth permanent signing of the summer transfer window, following Stephen Welsh, Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku, Moussa Yeo and Ross Stewart.

The Welsh side have also recruited left-back Tiago Parente on loan, but remain keen to strengthen in central defence before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
