Britain’s Arthur Fery came from a set down to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic and book his place in the semi-finals of the Winston-Salem Open.

Fourth seed Fery, who won five games in a row from 5-5 in the second set, claimed a 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory in Thursday’s last-eight match in North Carolina.

After breaking Kovacevic to take the second set, Fery opened up a 3-0 lead in the third, serving out to clinch his first semi-final appearance since Wimbledon in July.

The 24-year-old will face James Duckworth, who he beat in Cincinnati earlier this month, in the last four, after the Australian defeated Hungarian 15th seed Fabian Marozsan 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4.

Fery’s surprise run to the Wimbledon semi-finals this summer lifted him into the top 40 in the world rankings – he is now 37th – and with it a place in the US Open for the first time.

He just missed out on being seeded for the final Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows in New York so has been drawn against 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the opening round.

Also on Thursday, six British players were due to play their final US Open qualifying matches but heavy rain led to ties being suspended and postponed to Friday.

Jacob Fearnley is trailing Austria’s Jurij Rodionov 3-2 in the deciding set after winning the first 6-4, but losing the second set by the same scoreline.

Harry Wendelken is up in the second set 5-4 after dropping the first 6-7 (3-7) to Lithuanian Vilius Gaubas, but Heather Watson, Harriet Dart and Francesca Jones did not get on court.

Toby Samuel, however, reached the main draw of the US Open for the first time after his opponent, Chile’s Cristian Garin, retired during the break in play.
