Former Peterborough United and Hull City striker – and Final Score pundit – Aaron McLean gives his five takeaways following Saturday’s action in the Championship, League One and League Two.

Questions are already being asked about Russell Martin after Leicester fell to a 4-0 defeat by Oxford United at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes are looking for a return to the Championship at the first time of asking after being relegated last season.

McLean: “I think that it’s been difficult for Russell to come into a club that over the past couple of seasons has been on a constant decline and there’s been a huge turnover of players.

“His biggest challenge is changing the environment and the mindset of the players. He’s also at a club where there’s huge pressure being in League One. For a club of that magnitude it’s unacceptable.

“So I think it’s going to probably take a little bit longer than I’m sure he would like. But at the same time I’m under no illusions, I feel that he is the right man for the job and you just hope that he’s given the time to be able to turn things around.”

Following a much-needed 4-0 win over high-flying Charlton at the bet365, which lifted them into mid-table, Stoke City are looking to push on after a poor start to the season.

McLean: “A brilliant result for Stoke up against Charlton who potentially could’ve gone top of the league today after having a great start themselves.

“I think that was a real statement of intent, the manner in which they beat them and that’s back-to-back wins for them now, first against a Norwich side that I feel haven’t got going yet but will do and a Charlton side who’ve had a good start to the season.

“I think the recruitment has been good in the summer. Ethan Galbraith was a brilliant signing for them, and hopefully they can continue to build and start to fulfil some of the promise that we’ve expected from them for the past few seasons.”

Alex Neil’s Millwall are one of the most unpredictable clubs in the top four divisions. After five games the Lions have lost two matches and won three, including Saturday’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Bolton at The Den, which also saw two late red cards.

McLean: “Millwall never seem to draw. They had a brilliant start to the season, wining their first two games then back-to-back defeats, but they’re very much back on the horse today after a magnificent performance.

“I fully expect them to be in the shake up at the end of the season. I think that they are a team where it’s all or nothing. They will win plenty of games and they will lose a few along the way, but I think that they’ve got more than enough in the squad to be competing.”

Burnley sit bottom of the Championship, having been playing against the giants of English football in the Premier League less than six months ago. Their hopes of a first win of the season were squashed late on with Bristol City scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes at Turf Moor.

McLean: “They need to find some kind of cohesion and togetherness at the moment. They just look like a team that’s been relegated and a team that is still suffering from the hangover of last season.

“Obviously with a new manager [Nicky Hayen], he needs to get his message across to the boys as he needs to get some kind of confidence into them, but the only way they’re going to do that is by sticking together and grinding out a result.

“I think once they get their first win on the board and start to get a little bit of confidence they have got good players in their squad. I think Hayen needs to be given a bit of time. It’s far too early in this season to be making decisions on a manager’s future.”

Ian Holloway has got Swindon Town flying in League Two. They currently sit second behind Bristol Rovers with three wins in their past four matches, with Aaron Drinan’s hat-trick securing a 3-1 home victory over Colchester on Saturday.

McLean: “I’m confident that Swindon will do really well this season. I think they’ll be really disappointed that they didn’t make the play-offs last year. They just missed out and hit a really bad patch of form at the wrong time.

“But I think with a striker like Aaron Drinan, who got a hat-trick today and scored 22 league goals last season, I expect him to probably get even more than that this season. And with the experience they had from last year, I expect them to be fully challenging for automatic promotion this season.”
