Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is reportedly a leading contender to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United.

The Red Devils have made a disappointing start to the Premier League season and have picked up only four points from as many matches.

To make things worse, they bowed out of the Carabao Cup in the third round yesterday after Brighton came back from 0-2 down to beat them 3-2.

Carrick’s position is under severe scrutiny at the moment, and reports claim that he could be dismissed if United fail to beat Fulham in the league.

The Red Devils travel to Craven Cottage for Sunday’s encounter, and it could be a tricky affair, given Fulham drew 0-0 at Liverpool last weekend.

If Carrick were to be sacked, Howe is reportedly one of the main candidates to take over at the helm. He is a free-agent after his exit from Newcastle.

Howe left the Magpies after witnessing the departure of key players during the summer transfer window and is currently assessing his options.
