James was not spotted in an open training session yesterday, and he looks poised to miss the weekend trip to Everton.
Chelsea have had a mixed start to the campaign. They are currently on just 10 points after six matches into the top-flight season.
The Blues travel to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Saturday’s early kick-off and should fancy their chances of another victory.
Chelsea are winless in the last three trips to Everton, including two losses, but should be favourites to come on top this time around.
Alonso will be hoping for a better showing from the backline which has struggled to keep a clean sheet this campaign.
