For the first time since 2018, the Investec Champions Cup begins in October with the road to the final in Lyon starting this weekend.

While autumnal fixtures used to be the norm in Europe’s top competition, 2026-27 brings an earlier start date than in recent seasons with Irish provinces having just three league games under their collective belts before continental competition kicks off.

After a slow start to their United Rugby Championship (URC) campaigns, how are the sides shaping up to take on the best of the Prem and Top 14? BBC Sport NI takes a look.

Leinster

Leinster remain Ireland’s leading light and will be among the biggest threats to Bordeaux-Begles’ ambitions of a third title in a row.

Last season’s beaten finalists, though, have a recent reminder of just how hard it will be to derail the reigning champions, having been torn apart 41-19 in May’s decider.

Arguably, Leo Cullen’s side enter this campaign with a weaker squad than in recent seasons with the likes of James Lowe, Rieko Ioane, Rabah Slimani and Ciaran Frawley among the key departures over the summer.

Only the latter was replaced in kind through the return of Joey Carbery, although the returning 30-year-old is yet to feature in his second stint because of injury.

The side have won an incredible 31 consecutive games in the Champions Cup pool stage, and can expect to extend that run this season, but know they will be judged only by what they do in the sharp end of a competition they have not won since 2018.

If Cullen’s final season at the helm is to end with a long-sought fifth star, it will take some titanic performances in the knock-out stage.

Pool fixtures: Clermont (A), Sale (H), Pau (H), Leicester Tigers (A)

Munster

While Leinster are keen to put their last Champions Cup outing behind them, fierce rivals Munster were another to exit last season’s competition in bitterly disappointing fashion.

The southern province had their destiny in their own hands going into the final round of pool games but were beaten at home by Castres to drop into the Challenge Cup.

Once the Irish standard-setters in this competition, that result perhaps epitomised the recent campaigns of the two-time winners, whose inconsistency in the pool stages has too often left them with an uphill struggle.

It has been four seasons since they last secured a home knock-out tie, and even that was played at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

While there was a noteworthy win away to La Rochelle in the last 16 of 2025, bringing springtime European rugby back to Thomond Park should be the aim this year.

A draw that includes an away trip to the reigning champions, and the absence of Jack Crowley for at least the first pool fixtures, complicates matters somewhat, but it should be well within the group to improve upon last year.

Pool fixtures: Racing 92 (H), Bristol (A), Bordeaux-Begles (A), Gloucester (H)

Connacht

The URC’s eighth and final Champions Cup qualifier was dealt the harshest of hands in the draw for the pool stages.

Of the past 11 editions of this competition, eight have been won by teams Connacht will face in Europe between now and the end of January.

While Saracens, Exeter and La Rochelle may not be the forces they were when knocking off a few of those titles, they are all still more than handy outfits and Toulouse are alongside Bordeaux-Begles as the favourites to make it to Lyon for the final.

Stuart Lancaster’s side were one of the very best teams in the latter half of last season’s URC to book their place in this season’s competition, but such stern tests arrive with the westerners yet to hit their straps this time around.

They have won one of their opening three league fixtures with scrum issues and discipline among their chief concerns through the early going.

While few sides relish a visit to Galway, a scalp in this pool would sit alongside previous victories over Toulouse as one of the province’s biggest European wins.

Ulster

After never missing out on top-tier European rugby in their history prior to 2024-25, it is now a fate to befall Ulster in consecutive seasons.

Richie Murphy’s side made it all the way to the Challenge Cup final last year, when they were thumped by Montpellier in Bilbao.

That reverse, coupled with their league campaign falling away, ensured a second year in the lesser of European rugby’s two competitions.

Paired with familiar URC foes Zebre and Dragons, as well as Top 14 pair Bayonne and Perpignan, Ulster will expect to make a return to the knock-out stages, where they beat Racing 92, Exeter Chiefs and La Rochelle a year ago.

It will be at that stage of the competition, however, when their depth is again tested as they juggle the desired run in Europe with the ambition to return to the URC’s play-offs after a two-year absence.

The northern province have the talent to make an impact in this competition but ensuring they are not back here in a year’s time – in whatever way they manage it – should be the season’s goal.

Pool fixtures: Zebre (A), Bayonne (H), Perpignan (A), Dragons (H)
