Boston Bruins forward Tanner Jeannot and Carolina Hurricanes forward Nicolas Deslauriers dropped the gloves for a lengthy heavyweight fight during Tuesday’s game.
The fight took place in the first period and lasted nearly a full minute. Both players exchanged heavy punches without either one backing down, drawing a loud reaction from the crowd.
Officials eventually stepped in and assessed five-minute majors for fighting to both players.
One tweeted:
“Hockey fighting should be outlawed. It is brutal, barbaric behavior. Allowing players to fight normalizes violence and sets a terrible example for fans, young and old alike.”
Another chimed in:
“A true heavyweight bout!!! Reminds me of the enforcers era!!!!”
Here are some of the other top reactions on X:
“You must absolutely love Hockey for this very specific reason, where two men can settle their differences rather than just talk about it. Love this,” a third fan wrote.
“Hockey is the only sport where the refs just step back and let two grown men work out their feelings with their fists. Honestly? Beautiful,” one X user opined.
“Fighting is integral to hockey and should never be outlawed. It’s tradition. I’d bet 99.9% of the fans in that arena enjoyed it,” another chimed in.
“That’s the longest I’ve seen refs let them keep fighting in a long time though,” added another.
Nicolas Deslauriers and Hurricanes down Boston Bruins 2-1
On Tuesday, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Boston Bruins 2-1 at Lenovo Center.
Pavel Zacha opened the scoring for the Bruins on the power play at 1:31 of the first period. That was the only goal the Bruins would score in the game. With less than one minute remaining in the first period, Jackson Blake tied the score at 1-1 for the Hurricanes.
The second period remained scoreless, and Sebastian Aho scored the game-winner for Carolina at 10:19 of the third period.
“After a long road trip, you want to start the homestand the right way, and we were able to do that,” Aho said via NHL.com. “I thought we were creating enough offense to score more than two, but obviously we didn’t have to score more than two. It’s just tilting the ice in our advantage, and I thought we played a solid game.”
With the win, the Hurricanes improved their record to 10-2-2, sitting atop the Metro Division.
