Manchester United have reportedly decided to stick with Michael Carrick for the next couple of matches, despite the loss to Chelsea. The Red Devils are still looking for a replacement, but are not sacking the current manager for the time being.
According to a report in talkSPORT, Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for their UEFA Champions League clash against AS Roma. The Englishman was also confident he would be in the dugout, confirming it in his post-match interviews after the defeat to Chelsea.
Thanks for the submission!
The manager has been under pressure this season after winning just two matches across all competitions. The 45-year-old, who was appointed permanently this summer after a brilliant end to the 2025/26 season, was reportedly facing the sack before the hierarchy decided to let him remain in charge for a few more games.
Carrick spoke to the media after the match and said:
“I’m just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek now. You can look at it like that. You can also look at how far you can move up the league quite quickly if you win football matches. That’s the way it has to be approached for sure.”
Reports suggest that Manchester United are interested in Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, and Julian Nagelsmann. However, they are yet to agree a deal with any manager, and are keeping their options open.
Michael Carrick on Manchester United after Chelsea loss
Michael Carrick has admitted that the emotions are running high at Manchester United as they sit one place above the relegation zone. The Red Devils are level on points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace, while having just two points more than bottom-placed Sunderland.
The manager heaped praise on the fans for their support despite the form and said:
“There is a lot of emotion. We are a great football club but we want to win football matches. The supporters make a lot of effort and pay a lot of money to watch us play. You could see today [Saturday] the boys had the game in the right place and things have gone against us in a big way and unravelled quite quickly. There is a lot of emotion right now.”
Manchester United face AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League this week, followed by Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend. Unai Emery, who will be at Old Trafford next weekend with the Villa Park side, has also been linked with the job.
