The definition is “in fashion, very cool (and hot!)”, which takes up the back half of the clue. The answer is another word for it, so think of a word for something that lots of people like right now.

The wordplay is the front half, and it is neat. Two words do the signaling, and two small words supply the letters.

Which wordplay indicators should you look for?

Three pieces work together in this clue:

  • Indicators: “bears” and “turned” are the two signals. One is a containing indicator, which tells the solver that a chunk of fodder will carry another chunk inside it. The other is a reversal indicator, which says to flip the letters of a neighbouring word.
  • Fodder: “Polar” and “up” are the raw words to build with, and both get used in full.

A useful nudge is to write “up” backwards on the scratch space, then look for the spot in “Polar” where those two letters could slot in. Since the letter count matches the answer length, nothing is left over.

After putting all the pieces together, today’s November 5, 2026 Minute Cryptic answer is shown above.

Here is how the clue works:

  • Definition: “in fashion, very cool (and hot!)” points to the answer, since something popular is exactly what is in fashion and in demand.
  • Indicators: “bears” is the containing indicator, and “turned” is the reversal indicator.
  • Fodder: “Polar” and “up”.
  • Result: “Up” gets turned around to give PU. “Bears” then tells the solver that POLAR holds it inside, so PU goes in right after the opening PO. That spells PO + PU + LAR, which is POPULAR.

Polar bears turning up, plus talk of cool and hot, sounds like a line about the Arctic or the weather, so solvers can end up hunting for icy answers when the whole second half is just the definition. Spotting that “bears” is a container rather than an animal doing something, and that “turned” is an instruction to flip “up”, is what opens the whole thing up.

How to Play Minute Cryptic

Minute Cryptic presents one mini cryptic crossword clue per day. Each clue contains a double layer of information. There is a definition and a wordplay element within each clue, and they are presented in a sentence.

Anatomy of a Cryptic Clue

Every clue has two main parts working together.

  • The definition: A plain synonym or meaning of the answer, usually sitting at the very start or the very end of the clue.
  • The wordplay: The recipe that builds the answer, made of fodder and indicators. Fodder is the actual letters or words being worked with, and an indicator is the word that says what to do with them, such as “mix”, “backward” or “hidden inside”.

Common Cryptic Techniques

Clues lean on a small set of standard building blocks.

  • Anagrams: The letters get scrambled into the answer. Watch for words like mixed, broken, wild or shaken.
  • Hidden words: The answer sits consecutively inside the surrounding words. Indicators include in, within, inside or sample. For example, ANT is hidden inside “pANTry”.
  • Reversals: A word or part of one is read backwards. Look for back, returns or retreats. Today’s “turned” belongs here.
  • Charades: Two or more smaller words, abbreviations or notes join one after another to form the answer.
  • Homophones: A word that sounds like the answer when spoken, flagged by words like audio, reported or out loud.
  • Deletions and containers: Letters are removed from a word, or one word goes inside another. Today’s “bears” belongs here.

How to Play Through the Interface

Start by reading the clue and the number in brackets (this tells you how many letters are in the answer). Split the sentence and see which part makes a straightforward dictionary definition. The rest of the clue will tell you what type of wordplay to look for: an anagram, hidden word, reversal or charade.

The built-in scribble space is handy if an anagram is on the cards, since letters can be typed, dragged, or shuffled there. When ready, type the answer with a keyboard or the on-screen one and hit Check. If a clue is stubborn, the built-in hints and the short video breakdown for every puzzle show how it was parsed.

Complete beginners can try the free “Letter Play” and “Word Play” courses on the Minute Cryptic website or app, which teach the mechanics step by step.

Anyone who plays daily word games regularly might also add Connections and the NYT Mini Crossword to the rotation alongside Minute Cryptic.
