Alexander Zverev became the latest player to speak out against the demanding tennis calendar during his campaign at the 2026 Vienna Open. The new World No. 1’s complaint was met with pushback from fans, who brought up Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner while criticizing the German.
Zverev raised the subject after beating Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 in 58 minutes in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event. During his post-match press conference, the two-time Grand Slam champion emphasized that it would be “impossible” for him to compete at the 2027 United Cup after representing Germany at this year’s Davis Cup Finals, given the packed ATP Tour schedule. He stressed the need for a longer off-season and asserted that the tour was heading in the “wrong direction.”
Thanks for the submission!
“I’ve said it many times: I think we should make the season two or three weeks shorter and have more time, firstly, to give our bodies a rest and, secondly, to build them up,” Alexander Zverev said.
“I’ve been saying that for 10 years, but nothing changes. I think players are now speaking about it a little more and expressing more dissatisfaction. I believe more and more of that will come. Unfortunately, I think things are currently going in the wrong direction for us,” he added.
However, fans pushed back against Zverev’s complaints, arguing that he could skip exhibition events like the Laver Cup and the Six Kings Slam to manage his workload better during the season.
“Don’t play stupid events like Laver Cup, Six Kings etc. Problem solved,” one fan commented.
“You don’t have to play every tournament available,” another fan wrote.
“I get that but they don’t have to play all the entire year. Djokovic might play less than 15 tournaments if you plan your schedule you’ll get plenty of rest,” said another.

Others, meanwhile, ridiculed Alexander Zverev over his recent remarks on maintaining his fitness in a season that saw Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner sidelined by injuries. One fan also recalled that the German had interrupted Alcaraz at a Laver Cup press conference to joke about his “four-month vacation” after the Spaniard addressed player burnout.
“But didn’t he have such a superior health and fitness? I thought Jannik and Carlos were weak,” a user posted.
“But isn’t he the same guy who until yesterday was bragging about being in shape and that staying healthy was part of being a top player?” another fan commented.
“Carlos Alcaraz literally said the same thing regarding the schedule and has been for a while and Zverev mocked him for it,” said yet another.
Alexander Zverev gears up for Paris Masters campaign after Vienna Open exit
Alexander Zverev’s run at the Vienna Open ended in the semifinals, with Alex de Minaur securing a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) victory in their closely contested battle. The match saw two moments of controversy, as Zverev complained about the balls in use at the tournament and later convinced the umpire to withdraw the time violation he received for his ball-bouncing in the third set.
The Paris Masters will mark Zverev’s first tournament as World No. 1. As the top seed, the German has received a first-round bye and will kick off his campaign against Lorenzo Musetti or Hubert Hurkacz. He won the title in 2024 and is chasing a second, with seven-time champion Novak Djokovic looming as his possible quarterfinal opponent.
Next, Alexander Zverev will be in action in Turin and Bologna. The ATP Finals will take place from November 15-22, followed by the Davis Cup Final 8 from November 24-29. Germany plays Great Britain in the quarterfinals, with Zverev named alongside Jan-Lennard Struff, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz.
