Joe Allen is to leave his role on Swansea City’s coaching staff after Saturday’s final game of the season against Charlton Athletic.
Allen departed Swansea as a player having announced his retirement last May, only to return alongside fellow club legend Leon Britton to support new head coach Vitor Matos in November 2025.
But the 36-year-old Wales great will bid farewell once more as he brings to an end what was always expected to be a short-term stint in Swansea’s backroom team.
Allen and Britton were brought in following the appointment of Matos, who was initially unable to bring in his staff from previous club Maritimo due to work permit issues.
The two former Swansea midfielders then remained in place even after Portuguese trio Diogo Medeiros, Toze Mendes and Goncalo Ricca – plus Ryan Maye, who came from Aston Villa – joined Matos in Wales in December.
Allen will join head of goalkeeping Martyn Margetson in leaving Swansea this summer.
It emerged earlier this month that Andy Mangan had joined Swansea as a first-team consultant on a deal running until the end of the season, with Matos non-committal when asked whether the former Bristol Rovers assistant boss could remain in place beyond the current campaign.
Allen’s retirement brought to an end his second spell as a Swansea player after a stellar career in which he made almost 600 club appearances and won 77 international caps.
Pembrokeshire-born Allen had started out with boyhood club Swansea, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2011 before moving to Liverpool.
He spent four years at Anfield and six years with Stoke City before rejoining the Swans in 2022.
