The family of a nine-year-old girl who died after being found seriously injured on an industrial estate in Arbroath said they are “devastated” at her loss.

Police have named her as Minnie Merriman from West Yorkshire. She died in Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital on Monday.

Officers were called to the Elliot Industrial Estate shortly after midnight following reports that a child had been found injured.

A 35-year-old man, who was known to the girl, has been charged in connection with her death and is due to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court.

In a statement issued through Police Scotland, Minnie’s family said: “We are devastated with the loss of our beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo.

“Our family asks that our privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time.”

Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death and the other members of the family – who were camping in the area – are being supported by specialist officers.

Det Insp Mike Ness said: “Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by these events, especially Minnie’s family.

“A police presence will remain in the area while our inquiries continue.”

“Anyone with any concerns, or information, should approach these officers or contact Police Scotland., external
