Four men have been arrested and two are in critical condition in hospital after violent disorder in south Wales.

The arrests were made following a disturbance involving a group of men in Pontnewydd, near Pontypool, at about 19:15 on Thursday evening, Gwent Police said.

Two of the men arrested are in police custody. In total, three men were taken to hospital for treatment.

Specially trained firearms officers and the National Police Air Service attended the scene, alongside paramedics, the force said.

Det Ch Supt Anne-Marie Salwey said: “Violence in any form is completely unacceptable and anyone who is found to be involved in this disorder will be dealt as we will not accept this behaviour in our communities.

“We recognise that reports of this nature will prompt concern from our residents and it is likely that you will see officers in and around the area conducting enquiries as part of this investigation,” she added.

Police are asking for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around Hospital Road and Mill Road between 19:00 and 19:30 on Thursday to contact them.

The road between Mill Road and Hospital Road is currently closed in both directions, with motorists urged to seek alternative routes.
