How to defeat Gu Wanyue in Phantom Blade Zero (The Wailing Wraith)

Gu Wanyue, The Wailing Wraith, is a Pangzhen region boss encounter in Phantom Blade Zero. The trickiest part of the encounter is that the boss remains in an incorporeal state most of the time during the fight, making her immune to almost every attack. The only way to deal damage to her is by lowering her stamina to zero and staggering her.

In addition to her incorporeal form, Gu Wanyue also has multiple powerful abilities that require perfect parry and dodge timings.

In this guide, we will break down how to defeat Gu Wanyue, The Wailing Wraith in Phantom Blade Zero.

Location: Gu Wanyue is located near the Pond of Fading Song Bell in Pangzhen. Travel towards the village square and you will find her near the shrine. Make sure you have all your healing resources before approaching the square.

How to defeat Gu Wanyue

Once the fight begins, do not blindly attack the boss. You won’t be able to damage her without first staggering her. So, parry her regular attacks and dodge away from her stronger attacks (red attacks); this will lower her stamina gauge and stagger her.

Once she is staggered, you will have a small attack window. Deal as much damage as possible while she is staggered and immediately back away once she recovers.

Gu Wanyue moveset and counter strategies

1) For her general attacks, she uses close to mid range attacks using her sleeves. Maintain distance to avoid getting caught in her attacks and parry when an opportunity arises. This is one of the best ways to gradually lower her stamina gauge.

2) These basic attacks are almost always followed by a blue projectile. Time your parry perfectly and deflect the projectile back at her.

3) After performing basic attacks, she will attempt to perform a handstand grapple attack by leaping on Soul’s shoulders and breaking his neck. This attack is unblockable so be sure to dodge away from it. Dodging the attack will also lower her stamina gauge.

4) Occasionally, she will swiftly close the distance and attempt to grab Soul and slam him to the ground. Dodge away immediately as it is an unblockable attack. Note that she can perform this attack from both air and the ground.

5) After performing a flurry of attacks, she will spread darkness throughout the arena and vanish. During this period, she will be able to use any attack from her moveset, so watch out for either the blue or the red flash and act accordingly.
