Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has backed Manchester United manager Michael Carrick’s decision to drop him from the starting XI last month. He revealed that the call has not changed his feelings about the coach, his staff or the club.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Sport after the dramatic win over AS Roma, Fernandes admitted Carrick was right to drop him after his comments following the loss to Como. He added that the two have not spoken about it since, but insisted that his aim is to win all the matches at Manchester United and said:
Thanks for the submission!
“It’s been tough, there’s been a lot of speculation in the media. A lot of lies around many things that have happened between me and the manager, that we have cleared the air, then after that the manager took the decision to put me on the bench because I’m not performing.”
“Everyone thought that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions. It doesn’t change the belief I have of the manager and the staff and every player in this club. And it doesn’t change my aim to win every f—ing game that I have ahead of me.” (via ESPN)
However, Fernandes dismissed any suggestion that the players fought for the win for Carrick. He claimed that it was a much-needed win for the players and the club and said:
“We don’t need to save anyone’s job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together.”
Manchester United were winless in their last nine matches and ended their run on Tuesday, November 3. They were 2-0 down to AS Roma at Old Trafford, but a late brace from Matheus Cunha – after an early second-half penalty from Bruno Fernandes – helped them get a 3-2 win.

Michael Carrick has insisted that he is not letting the dramatic win over AS Roma change his mind. He wants his players to stay calm and prepare for the next match, as they need to use the momentum without getting carried away.
“I’m not getting too carried away with things. I think it’s an important night. But we’ve got to take stock, we’ve got to stay calm and prepare and be ready for another big game on the weekend.”
Manchester United face Aston Villa next in the Premier League before the players split for the international break.
