Defending world champion Jake Jarman narrowly missed out on floor gold but still became Britain’s most decorated athlete in World Artistic Gymnastics Championships history.

The 24-year-old finished second to American Frederick Richard, who won his first world title by a margin of 0.333 points.

Jarman, who was the final competitor in the final in Rotterdam, recorded a score of 14.600 to secure his fourth World Championships medal, having won vault gold in 2023 and team bronze in 2022.

“I can’t be annoyed although it’s not the result I was aiming for,” he said.

“To know that I could do a bit better yet I’ve still walked away with a world silver gives me a lot of confidence, and there’s room for improvement, so overall I’m really happy.

“We all really pushed each other and its good fun to be a part of and I’m excited for more battles in the future.”

Compatriot Courtney Tulloch, 31, was also the final competitor in the men’s rings final, where a stumble on landing his dismount cost marks as he finished seventh with a score of 13.366.

Meanwhile, British 18-year-old Abi Martin, competing in her first world women’s vault final, finished eighth with an average of 13.716 points from her two attempts.

Brazil’s most decorated Olympian, Rebeca Andrade, took gold in the vault, in her first World Championships after taking a 22-month break from the sport.

The 27-year-old won four medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, extending her total count to six, and then stepped away from gymnastics to focus on her mental and physical well-being.

She won her third world vault title in the presence of legendary US athlete Simone Biles, who joined the spectators in the Ahoy Arena and is yet to confirm if she will return to gymnastics after last competing in Paris.

Algerian Kaylia Nemour, the 19-year-old defending world and Olympic champion, took gold in the uneven bars, while American Skye Bradley complemented gold in Saturday’s all-round final with bronze in both of the day’s women’s events.

Jarman will compete again on Sunday’s final day of competition, alongside team-mate Hepworth in the men’s vault, while Martin and Alice Kinsella will feature in the women’s floor.

You can watch coverage of the Gymnastics World Championships, which run until Sunday, 25 October, on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
