Kylian Mbappé has paid tribute to Jesús de Miguel after the Tenerife striker died on Tuesday morning, less than a day after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in Spain’s Segunda División.
The Real Madrid forward shared the message on his Instagram story on Tuesday, as he wrote (translated from Spanish):
Thanks for the submission!
“Much sadness. There are no words. RIP.”
Tenerife confirmed that De Miguel, 30, died at 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The score was 2-2 in stoppage time when Owono, who had raced out of his goal, caught De Miguel in the chest with his knee as he tried to clear a long ball.
The 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea international was shown a red card and the match was abandoned. Medical staff treated De Miguel on the pitch for more than five minutes before he was taken by ambulance to the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria university hospital.
Spanish media reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be revived on the way. Tenerife’s first statement said he had been stabilized; the second, released in the early hours of Tuesday, said his condition had “worsened neurologically.”
The club confirmed his death hours later in an official statement that read:
“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.”
Owono has not commented publicly. Andorra sent its “most sincere condolences” to his family, teammates and Tenerife, while AS reported that the goalkeeper deactivated his Instagram account.
David de Gea and Gerard Piqué also paying tribute to Jesús de Miguel
David de Gea was among the first to respond to Tenerife’s announcement, replying with a broken-heart and hands-together emoji. Piqué, the former Barcelona defender who owns Andorra, wrote:
“I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesús.”
Real Madrid sent condolences to his family, teammates and club, and held a minute’s silence before training. Thibaut Courtois wrote:
“Very sad news. A hug to his teammates, family and friends. Rest in peace, Jesús”
The Spanish federation postponed every match scheduled for Tuesday, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures, and UEFA announced a period of silence before European games this week.
Notably, De Miguel joined Tenerife from Castellón in 2025 and scored 11 goals as the club won promotion from the third tier.
