TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has paid tribute to her 84-year-old father after his “shock” death.

John Kelly, is understood to have been found injured on an outdoor path in his home town of East Kilbride, near St Leonard’s Square shopping centre, on Saturday morning.

In a post on social media Kelly, 66, said her father “was in poor health but his death has still been a shock”.

Police Scotland said the death was being treated as “unexplained but not suspicious” and the family was being supported by officers.

In a statement on Instagram, the ITV host wrote: “Very sad news. My dad has died.

“I am mourning the man who bought me a telescope when I was five years old, who watched the moon landings with me and taught me to always be curious and interested in everything.

“He was in poor health but it has still been a shock. We will miss you dad.”

The Scottish presenter said she and her brother, Graham, were taking care of their mother and asked for privacy for the family.

Fans and celebrity friends shared their condolences including TV presenter Davina McCall, Loose Women panellist Denise Welch and sports presenter Gabby Logan whose father, the former footballer Terry Yorath, also died this week.

Kelly has been a presenter and journalist for more than 37 years. She has hosted her ITV morning programme Lorraine since 2010.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 07:00 on Saturday we were called to a report of a man found injured on a path.

“The 84-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.”

The force said a report on the death would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
