Italy international Daniel Maldini has had his driving licence suspended after he was found to be over the legal alcohol limit following a car crash in Milan.

Maldini, son of Italy and AC Milan legend Paolo and grandson of the similarly feted Cesare, was one among six people to suffer minor injuries after his Porsche Carrera 4 collided with another vehicle in the early hours of Sunday.

The attacking midfielder had scored the winning goal for Cagliari in a 2-1 win against his parent club Atalanta in Serie A just hours before the accident.

Milan city police confirmed to BBC Sport that there had been a road traffic accident involving the 24-year-old footballer.

It said: “Mr Maldini was administered a breathalyser test at the scene” and his “driving license was confiscated following a positive result”.

He was taken to hospital for precautionary checks before being released.

According to reports, an initial breath test carried out by the police at the scene of the accident recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.91 grams per litre, while a second reading registered 0.89 g/l – both higher than Italy’s legal limit of 0.5 g/l.

In a statement, Cagliari said Maldini had “undergone toxicological screening following recent media reports” and that “all tests returned negative results”.

The club added Maldini will join the squad for training on Monday to prepare for the team’s forthcoming fixtures.

Maldini became became the third generation of his family to play for Italy when he made his debut against Israel in a Nations League fixture in 2024.

He has made six appearances for his country, with the latest coming in September 2025.
