Manchester United are weighing up an approach for Manchester City left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri when the transfer window reopens in the New Year, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Red Devils were linked with a loan move for the Algeria international before the summer transfer deadline, but a deal did not materialise.

The Cityzens were open to negotiating a season-long loan for the left-back but wanted an obligation to buy included, which United were hesitant to do.

This has not ended the Red Devils’ pursuit of Ait-Nouri, and Plettenberg claims that they are expected to explore a fresh move for the defender.

Ait-Nouri, 25, has fallen down the pecking order at the Cityzens this term, and he is currently the third-choice left-back behind Josko Gvardiol and Nico O’Reilly.

United, on the other hand, have struggled in the defensive role with Luke Shaw‘s injury woes, while Patrick Dorgu has likewise been in the treatment room.

It remains to be seen whether they can strike an agreement for Ait-Nouri this winter. The Cityzens are likely to demand at least £25m for a permanent deal.
