Ashley Young has told Manchester United to make their call on Lisandro Martinez in January, saying he would part ways with the defender if he were the manager or an owner at Old Trafford.
Young’s demand follows Martinez’s dismissal in Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, October 31, a result that left the Old Trafford club winless in nine matches in all competitions.
Thanks for the submission!
The defender was booked twice quickly, first for a foul on Morgan Rogers, the second for catching Wesley Fofana with an elbow at a corner after a VAR review.
Speaking to Prime Video Sport (via Centre Devils account on X), Young asked the club to try and sell the Argentine defender in January:
“If I was the manager at the club or if I was one of the owners, I’d be looking at January and saying, ‘get him out now’. Just get rid of him. Because he’s not bringing anything to the football club. He’s not performing.”
Martinez, 28, is in the final year of his contract at Manchester United, with an option for a further 12 months. He released a statement on his social media platforms after criticizing technical director Jason Wilcox and the summer recruitment after the 2-0 loss at Atletico Madrid.
Martinez has been dropped by Carrick and is on the bench as the Red Devils take on Roma in the UEFA Champions League today.
Manchester United’s head coach Michael Carrick explains why Lisandro Martinez did not start against Roma
Carrick named Ayden Heaven in his starting lineup ahead of Lisandro Martinez for their UCL clash against Roma. Speaking ahead of the game, the Red Devils head coach was asked to reveal why he decided to go with the young Englishman ahead of the World Cup-winning Argentine defender in his XI for the clash against the Serie A club.
Speaking to Prime Video Sport before the game, Carrick gave a diplomatic answer. He said (via United Stand on X):
“You’ve got to pick a team. We’ve got a good squad. We’ve got decisions to make. We’ve changed one or two in recent weeks.”
After their home clash against Roma in the UCL, they will take on Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in what is a must-win game for Michael Carrick and his men at home on Sunday (November 8). After their PL clash against the Villans, club football in the top leagues will come to a halt due to an international break.
