Manchester City striker Vivianne Miedema will miss the beginning of the Women’s Super League season with a knee injury.

It is understood that Netherlands international Miedema, 30, has not suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The club said the latest issue is also “separate to the previous knee injuries she’s experienced”.

Miedema scored 10 times and assisted five more in the league last term as City won the Women’s Super League for the first time since 2016.

She had a largely injury-free campaign last year, although she underwent knee surgery at the end of the season.

The season begins on Friday, when London City Lionesses host Manchester United (19:00 BST). Manchester City’s first game is on Sunday, when they host promoted Birmingham City (14:30 BST).
