New Zealand’s in-form batter Glenn Phillips got a big reprieve after being put down by Naman Dhir in the fourth T20I of the ongoing five-match series against India on Friday. The Men in Blue won the toss and elected to field first at Eden Park in Auckland.
Phillips continued to be a thorn in India’s flesh, taking their bowlers apart with a blistering knock. The right-handed batter also benefited from a dropped catch, as he got a lifeline shortly after completing his half-century.
He attempted the switch hit off Axar Patel on the final ball of the 14th over. He failed to middle it, offering a chance at long-off. However, Dhir misjudged the skier and overran the ball, dropping Phillips on 57.
It proved to be a costly mistake as the Black Caps star slammed 107 off just 49 balls. Watch the video of the dropped catch here:
Phillips added insult to India’s injury by taking Nitish Reddy to the cleaners in the 16th over. He smashed four sixes and one boundary, making it a 32-run over and putting his team firmly in the driver’s seat.
Glenn Phillips is currently the leading run-scorer of the series, amassing 276 runs across four innings at a strike rate of 189.04. Notably, the ongoing clash is a dead rubber, with India already taking an unassailable 3-0 lead.
Glenn Phillips’ heroics power New Zealand to a record-breaking total
New Zealand posted 259/7 in 20 overs, registering their highest-ever T20I total. It is also the highest score against India in the format. Glenn Phillips was the standout performer with his blazing century.
He was ably supported by Michael Bracewell, who chipped in with an impactful 65 off 25 balls. Mayank Yadav picked up three wickets for the visitors, while Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Nitish Reddy, and Axar Patel claimed one scalp each.
