The game saw a lengthy stoppage for a serious injury and it has now been confirmed Tommaso Allan has been taken to hospital
Italy star Tommaso Allan has been taken to hospital after suffering a worrying injury against the All Blacks on Saturday morning.
Allan was taken from the field on a stretcher after the match was halted for several minutes as medics treated the outside-half on the pitch following a heavy blow to the sternum.
It was later confirmed Allan is in hospital undergoing tests, with further updates expected in the coming hours.
New Zealand made it two bonus-point victories from two under new head coach Dave Rennie as they ran in seven tries to defeat Italians 47-17 after overcoming a sluggish first-half display.
The All Blacks, who edged France 34-32 in their opening match of the inaugural 12-team competition, led just 14-10 at the break before producing a ruthless second-half performance to pull clear.
Much of the damage came during a devastating third quarter, when New Zealand crossed four times after Italy were reduced to 14 players.
Will Jordan was the standout performer, scoring twice to take his international tally to 50 tries in just 56 Test appearances, surpassing former All Blacks wing Doug Howlett’s haul of 49.
“It’s special. I think back to when I was a kid, practising my chip and chase in the back yard,” Jordan said after reaching the milestone.
“To think I’d be here today, it’s hugely humbling. I’ve been part of some great teams over the last seven years and, in turn, I hope I’ve inspired some kids to practise their chip and chase, and dream big.”
Italy’s hopes faded 10 minutes into the second half when lock Niccolò Cannone was shown a yellow card for making contact with New Zealand scrum-half Cam Roigard.
Following a bunker review, the sanction was upgraded to a red card after officials ruled the incident involved a high degree of danger with no mitigating factors.
Italy head coach Gonzalo Quesada disagreed with the decision and confirmed he intended to challenge the ruling, arguing Cannone had been held by an All Blacks player and accidentally collided with Roigard while attempting to break free.
