Owning Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft from Your Phone: How to Invest in US Stocks from India

This post was originally published on this site.

You no longer need to be based in the US or set up a complicated overseas structure to explore international equities.

For Indian investors, buying US stocks has become increasingly accessible through digital investing platforms. However, convenience should not be mistaken for simplicity. Before investing in a US-listed company, you need to understand the process, regulations, currency movements, costs, and risks involved.

How to Invest in US Stocks from India

To invest in US stocks from India, you need access to a platform that supports international investing and facilitates transactions in overseas securities. Depending on the service you use, the process may involve completing KYC requirements, opening an international investing account, and transferring funds for your purchases.

Once the account is active, you can browse eligible US-listed stocks, decide how much you want to invest, and place an order.

The process is digital, but the investment itself is still subject to applicable Indian regulations, tax rules, foreign exchange requirements, and the terms of the platform you use. Check these details before making your first investment.

Why Look Beyond Indian Stocks?

International investing can give your portfolio exposure to companies and industries that may not be represented in the same way in the Indian market.

Technology is an obvious example. US exchanges include some of the world’s largest companies in areas such as semiconductors, cloud computing, software, consumer technology, and artificial intelligence.

It can also provide geographical diversification. If most of your investments are linked to the Indian economy, adding exposure to businesses operating in another market can broaden where your portfolio gets its returns from.

That does not mean US stocks automatically reduce risk. Foreign markets have their own economic, regulatory, and valuation risks, and diversification cannot eliminate losses.

How Does Buying a US Stock Work?

Once you have an account that provides access to US markets, the basic process is similar to buying a stock in India.

You choose the company, decide how many shares or how much you want to invest, review the current price, and place the order. Depending on the platform, fractional investing may also be available, allowing you to buy a portion of a share rather than an entire share.

Fractional investing can be useful when a stock has a high per-share price. Instead of needing enough money to buy a full share, you can invest a fixed amount and receive the corresponding fraction.

However, availability, minimum investment amounts, order types, and trading hours can vary by platform.

Don’t Forget the Dollar-Rupee Factor

There are two moving parts when you invest in a US stock as an Indian resident: the company’s share price and the exchange rate.

Suppose a US stock rises by 10% in dollar terms. Your return in rupees also depends on how the rupee moves against the US dollar over the same period.

If the dollar strengthens against the rupee, it can increase the rupee value of your US investment. If the rupee strengthens, currency movements can reduce your return when you convert back into Indian currency.

The opposite applies to losses. A decline in the stock can be compounded or partly offset by currency movements.

That is why the company’s performance isn’t the only factor to consider.

Understand the Costs

The amount you invest is not necessarily the total cost of making an overseas investment.

Depending on the platform and transaction, you may encounter brokerage or platform charges, currency conversion costs, and other applicable fees. Tax and regulatory requirements can also affect the final return.

The Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) provides a framework for eligible resident individuals to remit money abroad, subject to applicable rules and limits. Tax Collected at Source (TCS) may also apply to certain remittances. Since regulations and tax treatment can change, check the current requirements before transferring money overseas.

What About US Market Timings?

US stock markets operate during different hours from Indian exchanges.

For Indian investors, the regular US market session generally falls in the evening and night in India, with the exact timings shifting when the US and India observe different daylight-saving arrangements.

This difference can actually be useful for investors who want to follow global markets after Indian trading hours. But it also means you should know when the market is open before placing an order and understand whether your platform accepts orders outside regular market hours.

How Are US Stocks Taxed?

Tax treatment is another area to understand before investing.

For an Indian resident, gains from selling US stocks can have Indian tax implications. The applicable treatment can depend on factors such as the investment’s nature and duration. Dividends received from US companies can also have tax implications, including potential withholding in the US and reporting requirements in India.

The exact tax treatment depends on your circumstances and the rules applicable at the time of the transaction. If you are investing significant amounts, consulting a qualified tax professional can help you understand your obligations.

Choosing the Right Platform

The platform you use can affect how easy it is to manage international investments.

Consider factors such as supported US exchanges, available stocks, fractional investing, currency conversion rates, transaction charges, account opening requirements, and customer support.

A good online trading app should also make it easy to monitor holdings, track portfolio performance, and access relevant transaction information.

Don’t choose a platform solely because it offers access to a particular stock. The costs and services around the investment matter too.

Should You Put All Your Money Into US Stocks?

International investing does not have to mean choosing between Indian and US equities.

You can decide how much of your overall portfolio you are comfortable allocating to overseas investments based on your financial goals, risk tolerance and investment horizon. Putting all your money into a handful of famous US companies can create concentration risk, even if those businesses are well established.

Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft may be globally recognised companies, but their share prices can still fall. Strong businesses can experience periods of high valuations, slower growth, competitive pressure, or changing market expectations.

Research the company rather than buying simply because its name is familiar.

The Bottom Line

Investing in US stocks from India is more accessible than it once was, but accessibility should not replace research.

Before buying, understand how the account works, how funds are transferred, what the transaction costs are, how currency movements affect returns, and what tax rules apply. Then look at the stock itself, including its valuation, financial performance, industry position and risks.

Having Apple, Nvidia or Microsoft in your portfolio can give you exposure to some of the world’s largest companies. The more important question is whether that exposure fits into your overall investment plan.
