Rugby match halted as crowd fight breaks out and teenager left seriously injured

There were ugly scenes as two sets of supporters clashed shortly before the end of the match.

A teenager was left seriously injured following a clash between two sets of rugby supporters that started during a match and continued after the final whistle.

Footage shared on social media shows fans of Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings trading taunts during Friday night’s pre-season game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, the Wolves’ home ground.

Shortly before the end of the match, several fans from the Widnes end came onto the pitch and headed towards the Warrington supporters, scuffling with stewards who attempted to intervene, reported the Liverpool ECHO.

Pint glasses were hurled and mothers with babies hastily left the stadium as referee Jack Smith temporarily halted the game.

Security then had to intervene to prevent any further confrontations between the rival fan groups with just minutes left to play in the match, which Warrington won 50-12.

However, after the final whistle, it was reported that crowd trouble continued and spilled onto the streets.

This has now been confirmed by Cheshire Police, with a spokesperson for the force saying that detectives are investigating the disorder.

Shortly after the match, around 9.23pm, a fight erupted on Winwick Road, resulting in serious injuries to a 17-year-old boy, who was rushed to hospital for treatment.

No arrests have been made at this time, but enquiries are ongoing, with a number of witnesses spoken to.
