Scarlets sign Welsh coach’s son in emergency deal as schoolboy only option left

The 29-year-old has signed a short-term deal to return to the Welsh region

Scarlets have re-signed their former fly-half Billy McBryde on a short-term loan from Super Rygbi Cymru side RGC.

The 29-year-old, who is the son of former Wales and British & Irish Lions player and coach Robin McBryde, previously made six appearances for the region in the now-defunct Anglo-Welsh Cup during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns. However, he has now returned to Parc y Scarlets after Nigel Davies found his fly-half stocks heavily depleted ahead of his side’s clash with Benetton later this week.

After being named in Steve Tandy’s Six Nations squad, Davies’ first-choice fly-half Sam Costelow joined up with his Wales-based international teammates at the Vale Resort on Monday.

He was joined in Wales training by Joe Hawkins, who filled the No.10 jersey for the region, while Costelow was sidelined with injury over the Christmas period.

With the pair now busy preparing for the Six Nations with Tandy and his coaching team, Davies has found his options at fly-half limited, with academy talent Elis Price currently out with a foot injury.

That had left 18-year-old Carwyn Leggatt-Jones – who was last week named in Richard Whiffin’s Wales squad for the U20s Six Nations – as the Scarlets’ only other option at 10.

As a result, Peel has moved to boost his resources in the short-term by bringing back McBryde, who has spent the last two seasons with North Wales outfit RGC following four years at Doncaster Knights.

A former Wales U20s international, McBryde came through the Scarlets pathway and is set to be involved as Peel’s side travel to Treviso for their URC clash with Benetton on Friday night.

Llandovery College student Leggatt-Jones is also set to make his third league appearance for the Scarlets in the away fixture.

As the loan signing of McBryde was confirmed, a Scarlets statement read: “The 29-year-old brings significant experience to the group, both on and off the field.

“His arrival provides not only vital cover in a key position, but also an experienced, highly-professional presence within the playing group at an important stage of the season.

“Scarlets’ decision to bring McBryde into the group reflects the current focus on performance,” the statement continued.

“His experience, game understanding and professional standards are expected to have a positive impact across the squad, particularly in supporting and guiding younger developing players during a demanding block of fixtures.
