Sixth seed Taylor Fritz will face lucky loser Rinky Hijikata in the first round of the Swiss Indoors 2026.
Fritz reached his only Major quarterfinal of the season at Wimbledon. He made the fourth round of the Australian Open and the third round of the US Open, and crashed out in the first round of the French Open. Similarly, he has reached only one quarterfinal at the Masters 1000 level this season.
Fritz has performed reasonably well at smaller tournaments. He won his only title of the season so far at the Mubadala DC Open, an ATP 500 tournament. He also finished as the runner-up at four other events, including at last week’s Lyon Open.
Hijikata made the second round of the home Slam, the Australian Open, and then lost in the first round of the remaining three Majors. He advanced to the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the very first time at the Indian Wells Masters.
Hijikata’s campaign in Basel got underway during the qualifying rounds. He beat Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets and then lost to Yannick Hanfmann in three sets in the final qualifying round. However, he still found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.

After a few underwhelming weeks, Fritz got back on the right track with a runner-up finish in Lyon. He has compiled a 26-15 record on hardcourts this season. He has competed in Basel in the past and has amassed a 5-5 record at the tournament.
Hijikata has put together an 11-14 record on hardcourts at the ATP level this year. He was on his way out of Basel when he got in the main draw as a lucky loser at the last minute. This will be his main draw debut at the tournament.
Despite a negative win-loss record this year, Hijikata has given a pretty good account of himself against top 20 players. He has gone 3-4 against top 20 opponents.
Hijikata didn’t even generate a single break point chance during his only prior loss to Fritz at the Delray Beach Open 2024. The Aussie is also on a three-match losing skid at the main draw level.
