The Unwritten Rules of Visiting (and Partying in) Ibiza

This post was originally published on this site.

Ibiza is known as the hedonistic, freewheeling Balearic island. Once a refuge for long-haired hippies, artists, and outcasts, the White Isle is now drenched in superclubs, each bigger, louder, and more theatrical than the next. There are €100 entry fees, six-figure tables, and sushi wrapped in gold leaf.

But look beyond the decks and velvet ropes, and you’ll find the real soul of Ibiza, the Ibiza that keeps people coming back long after their clubbing stamina has deserted them. Some of the island’s best places sit at the end of unassuming red-dirt roads: family-run restaurants where several generations still work the room, tiny bars tucked into the cobbled lanes of Dalt Vila, and beaches where lunch stretches lazily into sunset without a DJ booth in sight.

Ibiza may have built its reputation on anything goes, but the island has its own rules. Reservations are essential even at restaurants that aren’t on TikTok; yes, you can be kicked out of a VIP section; and even at an afterparty, there are limits to how loud the music can go. Spontaneity, it turns out, sometimes requires a little forward planning.

Then there are the logistics. For such a popular island, taxis are surprisingly limited, and summer wait times can be spectacular. Distances that look negligible on a map have a habit of becoming an expedition. A little organization goes a long way; knowing the island’s unwritten rules goes even further. Here are ten worth knowing before you land.

Sunset is not a competitive sport

Yes, Café del Mar is iconic. No, you don’t need to applaud every sunset you see while you’re there. The sun has done this before and will do it again.
