Whether it is Borussia Dortmund’s famous ‘Yellow Wall’ or the displays that fill the stands of Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, Germany has long perfected the art of the tifo.

But second division side VfL Osnabruck have surely topped anything previously seen at a German football match by creating a tifo featuring a rollercoaster.

Showcased before their 4-1 German Cup first-round defeat by Bayern Munich on Wednesday, the tifo displayed the words ‘VfL Osnabruck – a rollercoaster ride!’ and a wooden cart that went along the track at the Bremer Brucke stadium.

Osnabruck said the tifo symbolised its turbulent club history in a journey fans refer to as a “rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs”.

After “several months” of planning and building, the display also featured some of the club’s major triumphs like a 1978 victory over Bayern Munich and a number of “scandals and bitter defeats”.

The rollercoaster structure in front of the East Stand was built from wooden slats, plastic piping, fabric and was designed to be rolled out in sections.

The cart, constructed primarily from wood and styrofoam, carried dummies and was repeatedly transported back to the starting point for a continuous ride through a push and pull system.

The fun doesn’t end there though.

Osnabruck, who have recently been promoted to Bundesliga 2, said the cart passed a “photo station” where a flash went off and the “photo” of that cart instantly appeared on the right side of the grandstand.

Fans even recorded a special ‘Funpark Bremer Brucke’ song before the match to accompany the display.

The tifo was taken down just before kick-off, but the party-like atmosphere continued when Osnabruck took a shock 1-0 lead after just five minutes.

Bayern, the reigning German Cup and Bundesliga champions, had to rely on two goals from England captain Harry Kane, as well as goals from Tom Bischof and Michael Olise to reach the second round.
