This week has seen some of Welsh rugby’s most talented teenagers competing for honours at Rodney Parade

Brynteg Comprehensive School capped a dominant 10 days with victory in the Welsh Rugby Union’s Boys Year 10 final this week at Rodney Parade.

They overcame Ysgol Garth Olwg 38-10 in Newport to lift the Welsh Schools Cup for that age-grade, with the team having already lifted the District Cup, Ospreys Cup and Urdd 7s in recent days to complete an impressive clean sweep.

Former Wales scrum-half Rhys Webb – one of a number of internationals to have come through at Brynteg – posted about the side’s achievements on social media.

His son Regan – who was player of the tournament during Brynteg’s Urdd triumph – was part of the winning side in Newport.

“What an incredible 10 days for this group of players,” Webb said on Instagram. “Finished off in style with the Welsh Schools Cup Final beating a very strong Garth Olwg.

“A clean sweep. Proper testament to the hard work, commitment and togetherness of this squad.”

Full-back Will Mordecal had opened the scoring for Brynteg in Tuesday’s final, with fly-half Ioan Jones adding the extras.

Garth Olwg hit back through Harri King, but Brynteg extended their lead after winger Toby Williams raced over.

Again, Garth Olwg came back – with hooker Cori John scoring from a maul. However, just before half-time, Brynteg moved further ahead.

Tries in the second-half from No. 8 Logan Lewis and centre Mason O’Halloran sealed victory for Brynteg.

In the other WRU finals this week at Rodney Parade, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf ran out 24-0 winners over Y Pant Comprehensive in the Boys Year 9 final.

Jac Witchell scored a try in each half, with Harry Davies and Trystan Nicholas also dotting down.

The other finals on Tuesday ended up with Pontypridd Schools lifting the WSRU Junior Group U11 DC Thomas Cup, having beaten Swansea Schools 45-10.

Rhys Harries, Noah Dollman, Phoenix Bestwick, Cooper Pring and Toby Shanahan all crossed for tries for Pontypridd, while Dafydd Evans helped himself to two.

Swansea had Louie Head and Evan Cokeley to thank for their scores.

In the DC Thomas U11s Plate final, Rhymney Valley Junior Schools beat Mynydd Mawr & Dinefwr 50-10.

In a fast and open encounter, Harri Edwards and Tom Thompson both scored twice for Rhymney Valley.

In the DC Thomas Bowl, Cynon Valley Schools and Neath Schools shared the title after a 15-15 draw.

Monday’s finals saw Ysgol Bro Morgannwg win the U18s Cup with a convincing 39-19 victory over Dyffryn Taf.

Owain Weighell and Owen Lewis scored early tries for Bro Morgannwg, before Dyffryn Tag hit back through Charlie Reynolds and Ollie Hunt.

Conor Williams crossed for two tries to put Bro Morgannwg in control and, while Freddie Davies’ try gave Dyffryn Tag hope, late scores for Richie Jenkins and Jacob Hunter sealed victory for Bro Morgannwg.

In the U18s Plate final, Bro Teifi overcame a dogged Ysgol Gymraeg Maes y Gwendraeth, winning 27-19.

In the U18s Vase final, Haverfordwest High defeated Crickhowell High School 24-5.

Jack Harding, Louie Hurley and Joey Harrington all scored for CAVC, with Ffredi Easterby – son of Ireland coach Simon and Welsh rugby presenter Sarra Elgan – coming on as a replacement for the winning side.

Wednesday had the girls take centre stage, with the U12s, U14s and U16s finals.

Four tries from impressive centre Mali Walker-Hunt helped Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Dur beat Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy 64-27 in the Girls U16s Schools final.

Walker-Hunt took just two minutes to score her first, with Isabelle Thomas playing a big part for the winning side too – scoring 17 points.

In the Girls U14s Schools Cup final, Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive proved too strong for Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, winning 34-17.

Ysgol Cyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr withstood a second-half comeback from Haverfordwest High to win the Girls U12s Schools final.

Having led 21-0 at the break, Haverfordwest rallied before Plasmawr eventually ran out 33-24 victors.

The final day of finals will take place at Rodney Parade on Saturday, with more U18s finals.
