Wales star stuns everyone again as he scores unlikely try with incredible skill

Gloucester captain Tomos Williams showcased more fantastic skill to score in the Cherry & Whites’ game against Toulon

Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams has stunned commentators once again after producing an outrageous piece of skill to score a stunning try for Gloucester against Toulon in the Champions Cup.

The Cherry and Whites ultimately fell to a disappointing 31-14 home defeat which ended their European campaign, but Williams provided a moment of magic that lit up Kingsholm and briefly gave his side hope against the French heavyweights.

With Gloucester trailing 24-7 in the second half, Lewis Ludlow hacked a hopeful kick through towards the Toulon tryline. It looked a lost cause, with Williams seemingly beaten to the ball and surrounded by four defenders.

However, Toulon replacement Jeremy Sinzelle botched his attempt to ground the ball over his own line, allowing the Wales international to pounce.

Still under pressure, Williams then produced an astonishing acrobatic finish, flicking the ball over his shoulder and grounding it one-handed for an opportunistic try that reduced the deficit to 24-12.

The effort left the commentary team in disbelief.

“There’s a chance to chase here – and look at Tomos Williams!” said main commentator Matt Gillingham.

“Williams getting after Sinzelle and there’s a touchdown! There is a try. The sheer determination of the Gloucester captain has paid off.”

Former England winger Matt Banahan was equally impressed by the skill involved.

“Hacked through by Ludlow and then the chase from Tomos Williams,” he said.

“He gets through and taps it over the back of his head. Tomos Williams, another one-handed piece of skill. The skill here over the back of his head – boom!”

The try proved to be little more than a consolation as Toulon, who had earlier scored through Gael Drean and Mathis Ferte before Lewis Ludlam crossed, remained in control and sealed a bonus-point victory with Drean’s second score in the final minute.

But for Williams, it was another reminder of the remarkable skillset that has made him one of the most eye-catching scrum-halves in the game – and one Saracens fans are already eagerly anticipating ahead of his move to north London next season.

It is not the first time this campaign that the 30-year-old has left pundits and supporters open-mouthed.

In December, Williams went airborne to deliver a sensational one-handed offload against Saracens, prompting Austin Healey to urge him to “take a bow” on commentary.

Despite Gloucester’s struggles this season, Williams has been a standout performer, regularly producing moments of brilliance that underline why he was named Premiership player of the year last season.

Once again, Williams is likely to be one of Wales’ biggest weapons for Steve Tandy in the Six Nations and he appears to be heading into the tournament in stellar form.
