Wales claimed a fourth Commonwealth Games medal in the pool as the 4x200m freestyle relay team won another bronze.

Matt Richards and Dan Jones followed up the bronze they won in the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay, linking up with Kieran Bird and Tyler Melbourne-Smith to beat Scotland onto the podium.

Australia secured gold with a Commonwealth Games record time of seven minutes and 1.47 seconds, while England were second, a touch under five seconds quicker than Wales.

The two relay medals go alongside the silver and bronze won by Para-swimmers Ela Letton-Jones and Rhys Darbey respectively.

All four of Wales’ medals have come in the pool, with Olympic gymnast Ruby Evans failing to finish on the podium in the women’s all-round individual final on Sunday evening.

Wales are still waiting for that elusive gold medal after three days of competition in Glasgow.

“It’s such a special group,” said Richards.

“We’ve talked a lot about how tight-knit we are and a lot of us have come through the ranks since we were very young and grown as a team.

“To be able to do it together has been incredible.

“Seeing that Welsh flag go up when we’re up on the podium is one of the highlights of my career so far.

“So hopefully we can do it a few more times.”

Melbourne-Smith, who had been disqualified in the 4x100m relay on the opening day, brought Wales home on the final leg as he avoided being caught by Scotland home favourite Duncan Scott.

“My adrenaline was rushing but it was just about keeping it for the last 50 metres,” said Melbourne-Smith.

“Holding my nerve, and that’s what I did. These boys did all the hard work. For me, it was just about getting the job done.

“It’s probably the best moment of my swimming career so far. It is unbelievable and I’m happy to do it with these boys.”

Bird was on the podium after previously being part of the mixed freestyle relay quartet that swam in the heats.

Harry Milne, Jack Knight, Lewis Fraser and Bird had competed in the heats of the 4x200m freestyle relay on Sunday morning.

Fraser later finished seventh in his 100m butterfly final.

“When they asked me to step up for the team I didn’t even hesitate,” said Fraser.

“I know that’s an individual event for me, but I always swim with the team on my back.”

Theodora Taylor continued her impressive display in the pool by qualifying for the women’s 100m freestyle final.

The 17-year-old, who won a relay bronze on Saturday, swam the fourth fastest time to make it through to Monday night’s final.

Sophie Davies did not qualify despite a season’s best, while Kyle Booth bowed out in the men’s 50m breaststroke semi-final.

Meghan Willis finished sixth in the women’s S9 100m backstroke final, won by England’s Alice Tai.
