Chael Sonnen recently shared his reaction to Alexander Volkanovski wanting to fight Justin Gaethje at lightweight.
Volkanovski faced Movsar Evloev in a featherweight title fight at UFC 333 last weekend and pulled off an incredible second-round TKO win to retain the 145-pound championship. In the aftermath, Volkanovski expressed a keen interest in fighting Gaethje in a possible double-retirement fight with the lightweight title on the line next.
While many are excited about the possibility of seeing Gaethje and Volkanovski throwing down in the cage, Sonnen doesn’t see it that way. The UFC icon recently slammed Volkanovski for pushing for a Gaethje fight in a video posted to his YouTube channel and said:
“He does not know what we are doing here. Volkanovski just laid out one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard… He’s gonna go up, and he’s gonna fight Justin Gaethje. He’s got no problem with him; they get along. But they’re gonna throw their arms around each other and put the gloves down in the middle when this thing is over. Who does that help? Why would anybody book that fight?”

He added:
“You want to test yourself? I like the idea. You want Gaethje? It’s not the same thing. You want a shot at a world title that you’ve already had twice. It’s not the same thing. You want to test yourself, do what Ilia [Topuria] did, drop the belt, go into the division.” [H/t: MMA Fighting]

Max Holloway dubs Alexander Volkanovski as the UFC featherweight GOAT
Max Holloway recently labeled Alexander Volkanovski as the greatest featherweight fighter in UFC history over Jose Aldo.
In a recent video for MMA Pros Pick, the former UFC featherweight champion lauded Volkanovski’s records as a fighter and said:
“Happy for Volk, bro. I’m happy for him. Dude is the f**king GOAT of featherweights, dog. I always told you guys. They’re always chasing Aldo, bro. Aldo had all the records. Now f**king, he’s right there with the records. Can’t deny it.”
